Things That Make Us Feel #likeaboss: TV Shows

Everyone has one of those “I can’t miss an episode” TV favorites. Here are our 6 must-watch TV shows that make us feel #likeaboss. Either because we can totally relate to the main character or because they add some much needed balance to our busy lives, these shows force us to sit down and laugh.

These shows depict women in all different walks and stages of life: the just-out-of-college women, the “I have my career down but not the other stuff” women, and the women who are rather successfully juggling it all. Collectively, these shows allow us to continue the conversation around what women want and whether and when we really can have it all- in the most entertaining way possible.

Broad City – This show gives a whole new meaning to “rolling with the punches.” No matter what life throws at them, the Broad City girls don’t back down. While the scenarios are meant to be outlandish, actually, they are scarily realistic sometimes. Not only do we literally laugh out loud during each episode because things get so weird, we can actually learn a thing or two about not taking life too seriously.

Girls –The girls from Girls are endearing, totally infuriating and completely familiar. Are you more of a Marnie or a Hannah? Chances are, you can relate to any one of the characters in Girls. It’s as if the show is an anthropological study of people we knew in college. If you’re a 20-something, Girls gives you great comfort knowing you’re not alone in the struggle to follow your dreams and “figure it out.”

Empire– You may catch us humming “You’re So Beautiful” here at the AELLA office. We can’t help ourselves; the music is infectious! Not to mention the fact that Taraji P. Henson’s character, Cookie, channels the best kind of sass, storming in and out of every scene. She keeps us thoroughly entertained while she works hard to claim a career that’s rightfully hers.

The Mindy Project – We too have a girl crush on Mindy Kaling. On The Mindy Project, Mindy has her career figured out. But does that mean she’s a miserable, stressed-out woman who constantly looks tired? No way! Mindy is happy and she goes on dates…many of them. Plus, she is utterly hilarious. Who of us doesn’t need a good laugh after a busy day? Thank goodness Hulu picked up season 4.

Inside Amy Schumer – Can’t get enough of the “woman-on-the-street” interviews? Yeah, neither can we! Amy Schumer’s in-your-face, raunchy humor may not be your cup of tea, but there is no denying that this comedienne is has wit to spare and addresses real issues, like, for instance, sexism?! But her gift is in turning these topics into the most hilarious and sharp-witted sketches. Give it a try; you’ll thank us later.

The Good Wife- How can we not relate to a working woman who is struggling to navigate office politics? Plus, in addition to juggling her career, Alicia Florrick has teenagers, a husband, and personal issues to navigate. Needless to say, we are totally vibing with this show.
